INTRO
In case you missed the first part of the boys room makeover post I will catch you up a bit. We live in the suburbs north of Houston and our home is in a subdivision which means cookie cutter. One room at a time I am trying to make our home feel less cookie cutter and more custom. I decided to get to my son’s room and storage is a major issue for his room. You can read the first part of the project here.
We almost finished with redesigning and decorating his room and I am so excited to show everyone his room reveal. We even got special wall art for his walls given to us by Rustic Oak Designs. His room is turning out better than I imagined.
From last post we had completed the desk and craftsmen window trim. Now we have the hutch above the desk, window bench, cabinetry with built in shelves completed. At last minute I decided to redo is board and batten and paint it.
Board and Batten Update
While building our shelves , window bench and cabinetry I decided with the current board and batten he had which was about 5 and half feet tall and I felt that it would be competing with the shelving height. I decided that it needed to be lowered so I brought it down to about 3 feet high.
This was not to hard to do I measured the height I wanted and marked each board then used my oscillating tool to cut at that height on each board all around his room. What was troublesome was patching the dry wall and fixing all of the nail holes, etc removing the stiles caused. Little frustrating but was definitely worth it.
Paint color choices was fun but always one of the hardest decisions for me. The four colors you see on the wall are all blue grayish colors, my favorite for a boys room. From top left it is Benjamin Moore Smoke, bottom left is Benjamin Moore Booth Bay Grey, top right is Magnolia Paint Wedding Band, bottom right is Benjamin Moore Bunny Grey. I ended up choosing Magnolia Wedding Band. Its such a beautiful color, very calming and has hint of blue and green. I am always afraid of greys looking purple. I will always sample paint if I am wanting a grey color. I learned this after a few times of not sampling paint in the past.
Builtins Update
It was very important to me to have storage In my son’s room. My son has a ton of toys, nerf guns, junk, and his room was just an empty box before. My husband and I have been doing wood work for about ten years now, my husband has definitely mastered it and I love that we can build just about anything we want and not have to go spend thousands on something and majority of the time it looks even better than what we could of bought.
My son’s room is not a very large room, 12 x13, I had to keep this in mind with planning. I did not want his room to feel cluttered with extra furniture for storage, builtins was a must. We added a builtin desk with hutch, a window storage bench, and a builtin cabinet with shelving on top. It has turned out beautiful.
The builtins has turned out better than I thought they would. I will be having a tutorial on these builtins soon. We used red oak for the wood and we painted the rest Super White by Benjamin Moore. The shelves and window storage bench will help a lot with our storage issues.
Tv Frame
What is a super awesome room without a framed tv right? At first I figured this whole Samsung tv frame was overrated but I was wrong. The DIY tv frame was a total game changer and now I want one in every room in the house. For the wood frame I chose light red oak to match with the wood on his builtins and it looks perfect!
You can see how much of a difference it made to his wall by adding the frame . You can find the tutorial for how to make it step by step in the third picture just click.
