Intro
Finally I decided to jump on the diy tv frame bandwagon and let me tell you I am glad that I did. Total GAMECHANGER!! I have been seeing it all over Pinterest and Instagram and at the beginning I wasn’t to crazy over it but in the midst of redoing my sons bedroom I decided let’s try framing the tv. Kind of a hot trend right now and if you can save $$$ and do it yourself even better!
For under 25$ we framed my son’s tv with oak 1x2x8 (stiles) and you can probably make this for even less money by going with a different type of wood. I just wanted the oak frame to match my son’s oak shelves we made. His room is still a work in progress but you can check out the current status here.
My sons tv was a 4k Samsung 40 inch tv, not big not to small, and we were able to frame the tv and it did not interfere with the remote control sensor. This is something you might want to keep in mind because this didn’t even cross our mind until someone asked me. Luckily it still worked just normally. We used a router to complete this project, this called for less material and work vs other DIY tutorials you’ll find on the web but you just have to know how to use the router. Without further ado, let us get on to the tutorial and photos.
Material List to Complete This Project
- router
- Router bit (Rabbeting bit )
- 1x2x8 wood stiles of your choice, we used oak
- miter saw
- measuring tape
- safety goggle
- clamps
- wood glue
- nail gun
- 1″ brad nails
Tutorial (level intermediate)
After gathering all of your material and proper safety goggles we are ready to begin. Remember I am not a professional and everything that I state here is from my experience and knowledge. Let’s get to it!
Step 1:
- You will want to measure the inside diameter of your tv since we are going to be slipping this frame on to your tv.
- For example of inside diameter is if your looking at the picture to the right you will see the inside diameter measurement of this side of tv is 21 inches.
- After gathering all of your measurements you can calculate and determine how many wood stiles you will need for your tv frame.
Step 2:
- You are going to route your stiles first before cutting them
- Before routing you need to figure out what kind of size T SLOT ROUTER BIT you need *match the bit to the thickness of your tv frame 1/4 in, 1/2in, 3/4in, whatever your tv thickness might be.
- Clamp your stiles down and start routing
STEP 3:
- Now that you have finished routing your pieces you are ready to cut your pieces with your miter saw.
- Miter (45 degrees) your cuts at the inside frame diameter you measured earlier.
Step 4:
- Now that all your boards are cut and routed you are ready to assemble your tv frame.
- At first you are only going to attach 3 side since we have to slide onto existing tv frame.
- There are a few options on how to do this
- You can attach the top and two sides
- Attach one side, top and bottom
- We attached top and two sides
- We don’t recommend attaching bottom and two sides because this would make your job more difficult trying to support the bottom while attaching the top.
- To attach you will need wood glue, clamps and your nail gun. DON’T SKIP THE WOOD GLUE
Step 5 & Final
- Almost finished! You should be able to slide onto your tv now with the three sides attached
- Attach the bottom after you have the top frame completely on
- WOOD GLUE and nail the bottom with 1″ nails
- Clamp to keep together tightly , We left clamps on overnight
Finished!
Now you can enjoy your beautiful framed tv. Total game changer right? I will never see a tv the same way again after seeing this one framed.
